rDay One-Hundred-Seventy (9/11)

Another tedious visit to my doctor, where we have to endure the almost-unreadable collection of magazines (however, this time Kim managed to find an acceptably recent issue of Time), the almost-unbearable display of dozens of Thomas Kinkade reproductions, and just the wait itself.  This is where an occasional  infliction of pain is almost a welcome distraction.  And it is the setting that inspires my new project and its Internet domain name, banalphotos.com.

rDay One-Hundred-Sixty-Nine

Someday I am surely destined to meet the owner of this Camaro — hopefully not by way of a traffic accident — but I keep seeing the car for just a moment at a time now and then. Like today, when I had about one second, while walking down the street, to quickly get the camera to my eye before it was gone. (Yeah, I know, this isn’t nice and sharp like a pro would do, using a prestaged rig shot or a roller, but it was what I could do in less than a second, spontaneously …)

And here is the same car (I think) grabbed under even worse conditions through the windshield as we were turning through an intersection before I could even see the viewfinder, about three weeks ago.

So much for my emerging career as an automobile photographer …

UPDATE 9/11/15:  I see that I inadvertently posted this to the family blog rather than the intended car blog.  Oh, well …

rDay One-Hundred-Sixty-Three: Late Afternoon

Ivi drives Dad to (unsuccessfully) pick up his shoes from the repair shop.  We drop by EONI to pick up a broken computer, and spot Jim driving home.  Once home, we hang out for awhile in the almost-cold of the back yard.

rDay One-Hundred-Sixty-One

Visitors today included Olivia, a regular, and ‘Esa, just back from Italy.   Whoops, no pics.

Kim was on a tear today with constant inside and outside projects, and both of the ladies of the house undertook a great deal of cooking.

With a college campus only a block away, it should come as no surprise that dog walks that must be accomplished within an hour happen at that venue.

rDay One-Hundred-Sixty: A Shopping Day

It’s off to replenish vittles for Charlie-Bob, where else but the local farm & ranch supply.  Then more of the usual, spotting nothing more interesting than a Corvette along the way.  Finally, it’s off to Farmers’ Market, where we figuratively run into Honorary Daughter Olivia and buy veggies from the (adorable, as Ivi would say) Platz Kidz.

rDay One-Hundred-Fifty-Nine

Surviving a fabulous meal last night of Kim’s eggplant parmigiana and Ivi’s cheesecake, I arise for an early morning visit to Doctor John, where there is little to do but watch the sky from the windows while waiting. But we were able to spot a rare SVX in the return traffic.

Oh, oh.  I had promised never to display one of those exceedingly boring pictures of meals that people tend to publish. And Kim has announced that she doesn’t know if she can ever take another one of my photos of clouds and power lines.
Guess I’m running out of acceptable subject matter …

Oliver Sacks, R.I.P.

oliver_sacksWe just learned that Oliver Sacks, neurologist and writer, has died today.

Early this summer, I read his wonderful autobiography, “On The Move: A Life”.  First introduced to Sacks’ unusual and absorbing work quite a few years ago by Ann Nietzke, my Los Angeles writer friend (worth reading in her own right), I went on to read a few more of his books (thanks also to Gabrielle!), among them titles like “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat” and “Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain”. Highly recommended, all.
