From The Archives, Again

After two hours of walking about downtown this morning, I returned convinced that the outdoors is no place to be until the wildfire smoke has abated.  So, continuing my exploration of old negatives that have never previously seen the light of day, I found this January 1974 view of Malibu after fire and rains.

Then, a few days after that shot was made, I made a business trip to Washington, DC, but first stopped off in Davenport, Iowa where my brother was working as a newspaper reporter and living with his wife and young daughter, Gabrielle. Here, I photograph him during that visit as we encounter the bleak Iowa landscape.

A Winter Day at the Beach, Forty-One Years Ago

Came upon the negatives from a roll of film shot on a cold, windy day in the winter of 1974.  I think this was the San Pedro jetty and Cabrio Beach, south of Los Angeles.  Typical of a day of shooting with my photographer friends.  My old photography partner, Bill, appears in several of the photos.

rDay One-Hundred-Fifty-Four: In Search Of Mt. Emily

This panoramic image (full view is 7563 x 900 pixels) was shot from “OTEC Ridge”  this morning and sweeps from the west outskirts of the city, with north in the approximate center, and on to the east over the valley.  Under normal conditions, we would expect to see Mt. Emily almost dead center.

And for a little more perspective, directly behind the camera position(s) for the panoramic view, is this view from the AT&T tower on the “near-end” of the ridge.

And, to throw in another view, looking to west and north …

rDay One-Hundred-Fifty-Four: Travels With Charlie

On this morning’s hike, Kim decided that she wanted to photograph, together, Lawrence and Charlie (aka Charley-Bob Marley).   So when Lawrence summoned Charlie to join him in a pose, the Contrary Cur decided that we were undertaking a new game and proceeded to run at top speed from Kim to Lawrence, repeatedly circling them in a rapid and enthusiastic manner.  No video is available of the spectacle but perhaps the animation below — based on the few shots Kim was able to squeeze off — will give a sense of at least part of the action.

rDay One-Hundred-Fifty

Mt. Emily drops from view again today, as local authorities issue an air quality advisory suggesting that people at risk, including anyone over age 65, stay indoors.  Winds are apparently blowing in a different direction than yesterday.  In other news, Charlie gets a haircut, Nik does some yard work, and Ivi and Dad take the Charles-Beast on a sunset walk through campus.
