Halloween — Let Us Remember Edward Gorey

First, a NYT tribute.  Then, one of my all-time, ever, favorite (a family favorite at that) albums.  Music by the Tiger Lillies, inspired by the work of Edward Gorey:

“The Gorey End” chronicles the misadventures and misfortunes of the HipDeep family, and other characters.   Some of the tracks include “Dreadful Domesticity”, “Gin”, “Besotted Mother”, “Learned Pig”, “Jesus on the Windshield”, “Weeping Chandelier”, “Trampled Lily”, and more.

The Facebook Dilemma

I remember well how Facebook launched nearly 15 years ago and was a big topic of discussion for us at the ISP (Internet Service Provider) where I worked.  Some of us were quick adopters.  Increasingly, over the years, many of us in the ISP and web-hosting/web-building business became skeptical.  (My latest semi-diatribe or admonition is here.)   This week, one of the best, IMO, documentary platforms out there, PBS’ Frontline, has a two-part series on the subject.  Recommended.

And here’s another provocative piece on the subject

We Can Do Something To Repair The World Every Day

Ivi’s Happy Camp Smile – 2010

That’s the assertion of one of the latest pieces from Quartzy.

In the digital newsite Quartz‘s culture and lifestyle offshoot, Quartzy, writer Ephrat Livni tells us how Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami has some advice about what you can do when life looks dark. Take a read.

Walking home from the workplace, we compare two of my favorite four-door vehicles (found within a block), pass by the next-door sidewalk tasting room seemingly in autumn mode, see some This and That, and pass by neighboring Dog 163.

Walking home from downtown in the semi-dark …

After the morning rain lets up, we go out in search of fall color and juxtapositions of subject matter thereupon.

First, we stroll down our street, encountering at the end Jose and his custom FR-S/86, his sister Selena’s dog and cat, and listen to his father Sol’s great storytelling.

Then it is on to downtown WW:

Taking a little time off from attending to business in LaG City, friend David invites me to his backyard shop where he and his two partners construct/deconstruct all manner of vehicles.  Here we see a ’68 Chevy Camaro that was intended to get a little paint touch-up, but one thing led to another.  Now it is slated for a “resto-mod” workup, to be show-worthy and streetable, all 600 horsepower worth, by next summer.  And we see the progress on a frame-up restoration of a Suzuki offroad vehicle.  David says that Heather lets him do what he wants in the shop, so long as she reigns supreme in terms of management of their adjacent house.
