Brother Dennis reports seeing this rattlesnake — the seventh such sighting in the past year, compared to one in the ten years before that — while hiking today in the Santa Monica Mountains. Does this have anything to do with climate change?
Month: April 2016
rDay Four-Hundred-Two
Pretty much the usual: walkin’ the Charlie-Dogg. Some more front yard, by popular request.
rDay Four-Hundred-One
Dog walk in chilly late afternoon, then split off to visit at 103. Returning, I cut across campus to minimize exposure to the beginning light rain and come upon a high school track meet between county high schools. Dash home after a few minutes for warm and dry.

rDay Three-Hundred-Ninety-Eight
While Kim rests, Nik and Dad take Charles the Great for a stroll. If you can call it that, as the Sloth-Dog insisted on taking a sitdown approximately once per block. Nik also carried him across the street twice to avoid confrontations with other canines.
rDay Three-Hundred-Ninety-Six: MERA Prequel
While driving up Mt. Glen Road on our way to the MERA trails area, we stopped alongside the road after Kim announced that she had seen a herd of elk on the far distant mountain side. From that vantage point, this was the best that 200mm worth of lens could muster:
And this is a severe crop and blow-up of a small fragment of that scene:

Up early, quick snack, then head out to hike Mt. Emily Recreation Area (MERA) trails, despite mist and mild sprinkles, to find the “rock pile” and have an outdoor breakfast.
rDay Three-Hundred-Ninety-Five: Gangloff Park
rDay Three-Hundred-Ninety-Four
Warm, even sunny (until it wasn’t and the rain came) today. Looking at the burst of bloom everywhere. And of course looked for Prince (R.I.P.) tie-ins with Purple Rain. Also saw a couple of quite different expressions of truck culture.
